What is Massage?

Massage is the manipulation of superficial layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance the function and promote relaxation and well being.

What is the history of massage?

The word massage comes from the French Massage (friction of kneading,) the Arabic Massa (to touch, feel or handle.)  Writing on massage has been found in many ancient civilisations including Rome, Greece, India, Japan, China, Egypt and Mesopotamia.  A Biblical reference from about 493 BC documents daily massage with olive oil and myrrh as a part of the beauty regime of the wives of Xerxes. Hippocrates wrote in 460 BC that “The physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly in rubbing.”

What does a massage involve at The Therapy Room?

On your first visit to a massage therapist you will be asked a few questions on your general health and will have the opportunity to discuss fully any health concerns that you have. To receive your treatment you may either sit in a chair leaning forward onto a couch, or lie on a massage table according to what you find most comfortable.  The massage therapist will need to be able to feel the part requiring massage but your privacy will be maintained at all times.  High quality aromatherapy oils can be used during the treatment, and the experience should be relaxing and not painful.  The therapist will be able to feel any tension that has built up within the muscular system, and work to relieve this.  After the treatment is complete you will be offered a drink and will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.  Further treatments can be discussed and booked at your convenience.

How many treatments will I need?

It is variable depending on the nature of the symptoms you are presenting with.  Some people attend massage therapists to maintain a healthy back following a previous injury.  Some people attend simply for relaxation purposes, and some attend just once or twice during a period of acute flare up of a particular problem until balance is restored once again.

Do you need a doctor’s referral to receive massage treatment at The Therapy Room?

At present massage treatment is not practiced in the NHS.  To receive massage therefore you need to book a treatment with a private massage therapist.

How can Massage help you?

Massage helps primarily by relaxing tension held with the skeletal muscles.  If this tension builds up it can lead to chronic pain, joint deformities and deconditioning of the muscular tissue.  Massage also has a powerful effect on the circulatory system, increasing blood supply to an area to help aped up the healing process. It has a similar effect on the lymphatic system improving lymphatic drainage thereby reducing inflammation and removing pain-causing toxins from an affected area.  Massage, when applied compassionately will have a strong relaxation effect.  This is invaluable to the body by lowering heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure, reducing adrenaline production, Increasing endorphin release (the body’s natural anti depressant and pain relieving hormone,) and calming the nervous system.  It is during this period of deep relaxation when the body can concentrate on healing most effectively.

How long does a massage treatment last at The Therapy Room?

An initial consultation will last for about 75 minutes as it will involve a full treatment and an assessment where a full medical history and discussion of any medical problems. Follow up treatments will last for 1 hour. If you prefer to book in for a half hour massage the therapist will be able to concentrate on only 1 or 2 problematic areas in this time.

How much does a massage treatment cost at The Therapy Room?

Both an initial consultation and follow up sessions cost £30 for a 1 hour session.  A half hour treatment costs £20, a 90 minutes session costs £40 and a 2-hour treatment costs £50.

What do I need to bring to a massage session?

The therapist will need to be able to massage the area of the body that in need of attention. It is important to wear clothes that you find easy to get on and off and to wear suitable underwear.  It is also helpful to bring a list of your present medications and the names of any other medical personnel you are currently receiving treatment from.
