Frequently asked
questions about Hypnosis and the Hypnotic state.
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state similar to that of a meditation where you are
both physically and mentally relaxed. It is unlike sleep in that you are still aware of what is being said and can interact with the therapist
but are disconnected from what is going on around them.
How easily can I be Hypnotised?
Many people do not realise that they experience a hypnotic state often
many times a day for example: When driving and you realise you have gone
from A to B and don't remember how you got there (driving on auto
pilot); when you are watching television and become completely engrossed
that you do not hear others around you or where you become so absorbed
in a book or hobby that you completely lose track of time. Most
people can be hypnotised if they are willing and have
confidence and trust in the therapist. The depth of trance can
vary from person to person but even for those people who do not feel
they were hypnotised, it is still possible to achieve the desired
outcome although this may take a little longer.
Who can benefit from Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy utilises a wide range of tools which can help to resolve
presenting problems and underlying issues. It also allows people to
maximise their potential, achieve goals and live more positively. In
other words just about anyone who wants to improve their lives or better
themselves..
Is there anyone who should not undergo Hypnosis?
Certainly it is not advisable for anyone taking hallucinatory drugs such as
LSD or other similar drugs or anyone under the influence of
alcohol to undergo hypnosis. In addition those suffering from
severe mental illness, which include depressive illness,
psychosis, schizophrenia and also epilepsy and some
breathing problems. If you are unsure whether this may apply to you,
it is always advisable to seek medical advice from your G.P. where there is
a mental health issue or neurological complaint to ensure complete safety
although it is unlikely that any abnormal reaction will occur.
Will I lose control or get stuck in Hypnosis ?
No, you will always be in control and only accept the
suggestions if they are in line with your own belief system. You
are able at any time to open your eyes and leave the hypnotic state of
your own free will.
How many sessions will it take?
That is a very difficult question to answer as it will vary from
person to person. Some issues can be addressed very quickly, for example
Stop Smoking can usually be resolved in two or three sessions. Other
more deep seated problems can take longer. In these instances I would
hope that good head way would be made in four to six sessions but it
really depends on the problem and whether the person is willing to also
put in some work themselves.
